Open Nature Day at Barry Buddon

Barry Buddon has been a part of Carnoustie’s heritage for over 100 years. Who among us hasn’t listened to the sound of rifle and machine gun fire, or watched parachute flares light up the bay as they drift on the wind?

We have been in conversation with the military authorities about how and when the public can get safe access to this fascinating area. Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), it holds a unique range of birds, animals, insects and plants, some of them very rare.

CCDT is in the process of setting up a ‘Friends of Barry Buddon group to allow anyone with an interest in the area, its history and ecology, to learn more about it and to access it safely. More details on the FOBB when the CCDT website goes live in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, the nature lovers among you may be interested to know that there is an Open Nature Day at BB on 4th June, when experts from RSPB, Scottish Wildlife Trust, Dundee Naturalists Society and others will do presentations and guided walks covering birds, butterflies, Plants and Orchids, and Moths.

Participation is FREE, just meet at the Monifieth Football Pitch car park at 10am. The day will run until around 4pm, so if staying for the day, take a packed lunch and wear suitable clothing and footwear.

If you’ve viewed and listened to Barry Buddon from a distance, here’s your chance to see and experience it up close!
